On Wednesday morning, Ajit Pawar, the Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra, lost his life in a plane crash close to Baramati airport. The crash involved a privately chartered Bombardier Learjet 45 that was making an emergency landing attempt when it went down. In addition to Ajit Pawar, four others perished in the incident, including both pilots and two security personnel.
The Learjet, registered as VT-SSK and operated by VSR Ventures Pvt. Ltd., took flight from Mumbai around 8:10 AM. It made an initial landing attempt at Baramati but failed due to poor visibility. A second approach was attempted shortly after, but the aircraft vanished from radar near runway 11 around 8:45 AM before crashing in a fireball at the runway's threshold.
Emergency crews rushed to the site, where debris, thick smoke, and flames marked the area. Sadly, no one survived the crash. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation has initiated an investigation to uncover the specific cause of the accident, with poor visibility being considered a key factor.
At 66 years old, Ajit Pawar was en route to Baramati for various public meetings ahead of the Zilla Parishad elections and had participated in a cabinet meeting in Mumbai the previous day. Following the tragedy, his family, including his wife and son, hurried to Baramati.
The news has sent shockwaves across Maharashtra. The Prime Minister has offered condolences, honoring Ajit Pawar as a committed leader who had a deep connection with the community.
