Air India Flight Returns After 8 Hours Due to Wrong Aircraft

In a rare incident, an Air India flight turned into a “flight to nowhere” after it was forced to return mid-air due to a technical and regulatory issue. The Air India flight returns story has raised concerns about airline operations and passenger inconvenience.

The flight, AI185, had taken off from New Delhi and was headed to Vancouver. However, after flying for nearly four hours and entering Chinese airspace near Kunming, the airline realised that the aircraft being used did not have permission to operate in Canada.

The plane continued flying back and finally landed in Delhi after spending almost eight hours in the air. All passengers and crew were safe, and no injuries were reported. However, the long journey without reaching the destination caused major inconvenience to travellers.

The aircraft involved was a Boeing 777-200LR. At present, Air India is only approved to operate its Boeing 777-300ER on routes to Canada. Different countries have strict aviation rules, and airlines must follow them carefully, including using only approved aircraft types.

In a statement, Air India said the return was due to an “operational issue” and that the decision was taken as per safety rules. The airline also apologised to passengers and arranged hotel stays and other support in Delhi. A new flight was later arranged to take passengers to their destination.

This Air India flight returns incident is expected to cost the airline heavily. A large aircraft like a Boeing 777 burns around eight to nine tonnes of fuel every hour, making the long flight very expensive.

The incident highlights how even small mistakes in aviation planning can lead to big disruptions, affecting both airlines and passengers.
