Sony Honda Mobility made an impactful statement at CES 2026 in Las Vegas by revealing its latest prototype, the Afeela electric vehicle. This launch comes during a period when numerous American automakers are retracting or delaying their electric vehicle advancements. Unlike competitors, the Sony-Honda partnership chose the largest technology exposition to affirm that their electric vehicle ambitions remain strong.

The prototype advances the Afeela vision initially presented at prior CES events. With considerable attention given to digital features, connectivity, and entertainment systems, this vehicle shines a spotlight on Sony’s expertise in software and gaming, paired with Honda’s proven track record in vehicle design and production.

Pricing for their inaugural production model, named Afeela 1, has been set at $89,900. This model is presented as a high-end electric sedan, aimed at consumers who prioritize cutting-edge technology alongside driving excellence. The company is targeting a potential 2028 launch for the production model in the U.S.

The Afeela unveiling was particularly significant this year at CES 2026, where the number of new electric vehicles was noticeably reduced compared to previous shows. Many companies are facing challenges linked to slow EV sales, rising costs, and uncertainties from tariffs affecting auto parts and vehicle imports. Because of these pressures, some brands have postponed or axed their planned electric vehicle introductions.

Changes in U.S. policy are also influencing this landscape. The scaling back of EV-friendly initiatives, including the elimination of the $7,500 federal tax credit, has lessened the incentives for consumers to adopt electric vehicles, leading to a more cautious buyer sentiment and impacting sales growth across the EV sector.

Formed in 2022, Sony Honda Mobility aims to revolutionize the electric vehicle industry by merging Honda’s manufacturing expertise with Sony’s digital capabilities. By continuing to promote the Afeela at CES, this joint venture is positioning itself for the long-term, betting on a resurgence in demand for technology-driven electric vehicles as the market stabilizes.
