Abu Dhabi Sets Global Standard for Modular Smart Vehicles

Post by : Bianca Hayes

In a significant advancement in urban mobility, Abu Dhabi has officially adopted modular smart vehicles as a new category of road transport. This groundbreaking announcement was made during DRIFTx 2025 at the Abu Dhabi Autonomous Systems Week, marking a pivotal moment in city transport innovation.

Engineered by NExT, these innovative vehicles can be reconfigured to either connect or detach based on the number of passengers or specific operational needs. This adaptability not only streamlines traffic management but also helps alleviate congestion and reduce carbon emissions, fostering a more sustainable urban transport landscape.

Supported by extensive research from esteemed institutions in New York and Abu Dhabi, alongside international accolades and practical trials, these vehicles highlight a transformative approach to city mobility. Unlike traditional vehicles, modular smart vehicles can react dynamically to demand, making them ideal for both daily commutes and specialized transport services.

In collaboration with Emirates Driving Company (EDC), Liftango, and Paradigma Innovation Hub, the Integrated Transport Centre (ITC) is spearheading the world's very first pilot program of these vehicles on Yas Island. This initiative aims to showcase the real-world benefits of modular connectivity while paving the way for the wider adoption of smart and autonomous driving technologies in Abu Dhabi.

Beyond immediate operational improvements, these vehicles pave the way for enhancements in remote-control and autonomous driving technology, reflecting the city’s aspirations for a fully integrated intelligent transport network. Through this initiative, Abu Dhabi is further establishing its role as a global front-runner in sustainable, innovative mobility solutions.

With this landmark recognition, modular smart vehicles transition from being a futuristic idea to a tangible reality—ready to transform urban transport and offering a model for cities around the world to adopt smarter, greener, and more flexible mobility systems.
