A powerful earthquake measuring 7.8 in magnitude struck the southern Philippines early Monday, killing at least three people and causing widespread damage across parts of Mindanao. Authorities issued tsunami warnings immediately after the quake and urged residents to remain alert as aftershocks continued to shake the region.
According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, the earthquake occurred at around 7:37 a.m. local time. The epicentre was located approximately 13 kilometres southwest of General Santos City on the island of Mindanao. The United States Geological Survey also recorded the earthquake and reported that it struck at a relatively shallow depth, increasing the intensity of shaking felt on the surface.
Emergency officials confirmed that at least three people lost their lives in the disaster. Rescue teams and local authorities continued assessing the damage, with concerns that the number of casualties could rise as information from affected communities becomes available.
Buildings, schools, businesses, and homes suffered varying degrees of damage in areas near the epicentre. Videos and photographs shared by local media showed collapsed walls, damaged structures, and debris scattered across streets. Several vehicles were also damaged by falling concrete and building materials.
Residents rushed outdoors when the strong tremors began. Many people sought safety in open spaces as emergency personnel moved quickly to inspect buildings and assess risks. Authorities warned citizens not to return to damaged homes or structures until safety inspections had been completed because powerful aftershocks remained possible.
Schools in several affected areas were temporarily closed following the earthquake. The disaster occurred as students returned for the beginning of the new academic year, prompting concerns for children's safety. Government agencies and emergency workers were deployed to inspect educational institutions and ensure that buildings remained structurally sound before classes resumed.
Power outages and communication disruptions were reported in some communities, adding to the challenges faced by rescue teams. Local authorities worked to restore essential services while emergency shelters were prepared for residents forced to leave damaged homes.
Following the earthquake, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued alerts warning that waves could affect parts of the Philippines and neighbouring countries. Authorities advised residents living near coastlines to move to higher ground as a precaution.
The warning also extended to parts of Indonesia and Malaysia, where smaller waves were considered possible. However, several hours later, officials announced that the tsunami threat had largely passed, easing fears of further destruction along coastal areas.
Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said emergency response teams had been mobilized and evacuation centres were fully operational to assist affected residents. Government agencies were instructed to coordinate rescue efforts, provide humanitarian assistance, and evaluate the full extent of the damage.
The Philippines is one of the world's most earthquake-prone countries because it lies along the Pacific Ring of Fire, an area known for frequent seismic and volcanic activity. The country experiences numerous earthquakes each year, although only a small number cause major destruction.
Experts say strong aftershocks are likely to continue in the coming days. Authorities have advised residents to follow official instructions and remain cautious as structural assessments and rescue operations continue.
Disaster response teams are expected to remain on high alert while engineers inspect roads, bridges, schools, and public facilities. Humanitarian organizations and government agencies are also preparing assistance for communities affected by the quake.
As recovery efforts begin, authorities are focusing on protecting lives, restoring essential services, and helping affected residents return safely to normal life. Officials will continue monitoring seismic activity and provide further updates as more information becomes available.
