A small Ohio earthquake with a magnitude of 2.2 was recorded early Friday morning in Geauga County. The tremor happened just before 7:30 a.m. in an area located south of Madison.

According to experts, the Ohio earthquake was very small and caused only light shaking. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) said only a few reports of shaking were received.

Researchers say earthquakes with a magnitude of 2.5 or lower are usually not strong enough for people to feel. However, these small tremors can still be detected by special instruments called seismographs.

Scientists from Michigan Technological University explain that millions of small earthquakes like this happen around the world every year.

Data from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources shows that more than 12 earthquakes have already been recorded in the state this year.

Officials say the latest Ohio earthquake did not cause any damage and was only a minor natural event recorded by monitoring systems.
