UN Raises Alarm on Imran Khan's Detention Conditions in Pakistan

The detention of Imran Khan has captured global attention once more, as a United Nations human rights expert expressed serious concerns regarding the conditions under which the former Prime Minister is imprisoned. This warning arrives amid escalating political strife in Pakistan following Khan's ousting from office in April 2022 and the ongoing suppression of his political party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf.

In a compelling statement released on Friday, UN Special Rapporteur on torture, Alice Jill Edwards, called on Pakistani authorities to urgently enhance Imran Khan's detention conditions. She indicated that the reported treatment he is enduring could be classified as torture or as inhumane or degrading treatment under international human rights standards. Edwards noted that she has officially presented the issue to the Government of Pakistan and will be vigilantly observing the developments.

At 72 years old, Imran Khan has been confined at Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi since September 26, 2023. He faces several legal charges, which his supporters deem politically motivated. The Pakistani government and military officials have rejected these claims, asserting that all legal actions are being executed in accordance with the law.

According to the UN expert, credible reports indicate that Imran Khan has been subjected to prolonged solitary confinement, spending up to 23 hours per day isolated in his prison cell. His movements and communication with the outside world are severely restricted, and his cell is under constant surveillance. Prolonged or indefinite solitary confinement contravenes international human rights norms, with isolation exceeding 15 days potentially amounting to psychological torture.

Edwards emphasized the urgent need to end Khan's solitary confinement, warning of the potential for severe physical and psychological damage from prolonged isolation. Reports suggest Khan has been denied regular outdoor exercise, interactions with other inmates, and opportunities for communal prayers. Even visits from lawyers and family members, sanctioned by the court, have reportedly been routinely interrupted or cut short.

Concerns were also raised regarding the harsh conditions of Khan's prison cell, characterized as small, poorly ventilated, and devoid of natural light. Reports indicate extreme temperature variations in both summer and winter, unpleasant odors, and pest infestations have led to nausea, vomiting, and significant weight loss.

The UN expert stated that anyone deprived of liberty should be treated with respect and dignity, particularly in light of their age and health conditions. Imran Khan has a medical history that includes a spinal injury from a 2013 accident and gunshot wounds from a 2022 assassination attempt. Edwards reported that Khan has lacked adequate medical attention and urged Pakistani authorities to enable access for his medical team.

Khan's detention has emerged as one of the most contentious political issues in Pakistan today. Since he was removed from the Prime Ministerial position, tensions have escalated, with his supporters alleging political persecution while the government maintains that the legal system is functioning appropriately. This situation has amplified international scrutiny on Pakistan's human rights practices amid the spiraling political crisis.

Edwards confirmed that she has formally discussed Imran Khan’s case with Pakistani officials and plans to continue monitoring the situation closely, as the political upheaval in the country shows no signs of subsiding.
