Tragedy Unfolds in South Korea: Boiler Tower Collapse Claims Three Lives

A devastating incident occurred in Ulsan, South Korea, where a boiler tower measuring 60 meters (196 feet) collapsed during its demolition at a retired thermal power plant on Thursday. The catastrophe has resulted in the deaths of three workers, with at least five others trapped under the debris, according to local authorities.

At the time of the collapse, nine workers were on-site. Rescue teams swiftly managed to save two individuals, but sadly, another rescued later died in the hospital early Friday.

A second fatality was confirmed hours after the accident, along with a doctor verifying the passing of a third worker still enveloped in the rubble. Officials fear the remaining two missing workers may have also died.

Rescue efforts have faced considerable obstacles due to the precarious debris and hazardous materials present at the site, leading to a temporary halt in operations to manage the risk of secondary collapses as teams work on stabilizing the area.

Kim Jeong-shik from the Ulsan Fire Department reported that over 340 rescuers and various vehicles are on site, utilizing thermal cameras, search dogs, endoscopes, and other detection resources. “The rescue area is heavily contaminated with asbestos and glass fibers, and the confined space mandates manual debris removal,” Kim stated during a briefing.

South Korean President Lee Jae Myung has instructed authorities to mobilize all necessary personnel and equipment to continue search efforts, stressing the importance of safeguarding emergency responders amid these dangerous conditions.

The thermal power facility was decommissioned in 2021, concluding 40 years of service. Officials remarked that the boiler tower, one of three on-site, may have been structurally compromised during ongoing demolition activities, potentially leading to the unexpected collapse.

The ongoing search efforts have sparked renewed dialogue concerning safety regulations for demolition and industrial work environments in South Korea—a nation that has seen its share of workplace mishaps despite improved safety measures in recent years.
