Two 19-year-old men have been charged after a taxi driver was shot dead in North Battleford
President Donald Trump has escalated his rhetoric on immigration, asserting his desire for a “lasting halt on immigration” from economically challenged nations while reevaluating the legal standings of millions of immigrants presently residing in the United States. He attributes various issues, including crime and housing shortages, to immigration, framing it as a facet of broader “societal dysfunction” facing the nation.
These strong comments came in the wake of the shooting of two National Guard personnel patrolling Washington, D.C., in accordance with Trump’s crime-control strategy. Tragically, one soldier succumbed to their injuries while the other remains critically injured.
In immediate response, Trump declared the dispatch of an additional 500 National Guard members to the capital, although the origins of these reinforcements remain undefined. Currently, over 2,200 Guardsmen from various states are present in D.C.
Officials report that 29-year-old Lakanwal opened fire on the Guardsmen shortly after turning a corner. The troops quickly apprehended him. Authorities suspect he acted independently.
Lakanwal, who sustained non-life-threatening injuries, had a background with a CIA-supported Afghan military unit before relocating to the U.S. in 2021 under Operation Allies Welcome—aimed at evacuating Afghans following the U.S.’s withdrawal from Afghanistan. His asylum application, initially filed under the Biden administration, received approval during Trump’s presidency.
Investigators are pursuing warrants across multiple states as they seek to determine a motive. Officials have refrained from commenting on what may have prompted the assault.
The soldiers involved were Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, 20, and Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe, 24—both serving in the West Virginia National Guard. They had been on duty in Washington since August as part of Trump’s law-enforcement initiative.
Beckstrom, a recent high school graduate who volunteered for this mission, tragically passed away from her injuries. Wolfe remains in critical condition.
West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey has ordered flags to be flown at half-mast, calling for a statewide moment of silence in honor of the two soldiers. He commemorated them as heroes who were “serving our country and safeguarding the capital” when they were attacked.
Jeanine Pirro, the U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia, confirmed that Lakanwal’s charges have been elevated to first-degree murder following Beckstrom’s death, noting that further charges could emerge as the investigation unfolds.
This attack has spurred Trump’s intensified demand to reassess millions of legal immigrants and diminish the overall immigrant population. His administration has been reviewing immigration cases for nearly a year, and the recent incident has hastened these initiatives.
In a late-night social media update, Trump argued that many of the nation’s societal issues are linked to foreign-born individuals and advocated for what he terms as “reverse migration.”
