Trump Cautions Japan Against Provoking China Amid Taiwan Tensions

TOKYO — US President Donald Trump has cautioned Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi against provoking China regarding Taiwan's sovereignty following a recent diplomatic confrontation between Tokyo and Beijing.

The tension began after Takaichi mentioned that Japan might intervene militarily if Taiwan, which is claimed by China, were attacked. In response, Beijing expressed outrage, summoning Japan's ambassador and advising Chinese citizens to avoid traveling to Japan due to safety concerns.

During a phone conversation with Trump on Monday, Chinese leader Xi Jinping asserted that Taiwan's return is "an integral part of the post-war international order." In light of this, Trump advised Takaichi to refrain from provocative statements while bolstering diplomatic ties. Officials noted that Trump's counsel was diplomatic, lacking a direct demand for her to retract her comments.

Takaichi confirmed their discussion included the conversation between Trump and Xi, in addition to the broader US-Japan relationship. She stated that Trump extended his support and encouraged her to reach out anytime. However, Japanese officials expressed concern over the delicate balance of regional diplomacy.

These escalating tensions underscore the ongoing challenges in Asia as both Japan and China navigate Taiwan-related issues. While Beijing warned of potential dangers to Chinese nationals in Japan, Japan's foreign ministry rebutted such claims, asserting that crime reports have not risen.

This situation persists amid ongoing efforts by the US and China to sustain a diplomatic equilibrium in the region, particularly concerning trade and agricultural agreements.
