Siddhant Awasthi Parts Ways with Tesla After Eight Years at the Helm of Cybertruck

Post by : Bianca Hayes

In an unexpected turn, Siddhant Awasthi, who has been steering Tesla’s Cybertruck initiative, announced his exit after more than eight years at the forefront of the electric vehicle industry. His departure further compounds the leadership changes and talent evolution Tesla is currently experiencing.

Awasthi’s journey at Tesla is quite noteworthy. He began his career with Tesla in 2018 right after his schooling, having previously interned with the firm and worked on a hyperloop project. His rapid ascent included a promotion to engineering manager within two years and a subsequent role as senior technical program manager overseeing the Cybertruck’s 48-volt architecture. By the end of 2022, he was leading the entire Cybertruck initiative, focusing on enhancing production strategies and future vehicle upgrades.

Yet, despite an ambitious outlook, the Cybertruck initiative has faced significant market hurdles. Tesla initially targeted an annual production of 250,000 units; however, only around 25,000 units are currently sold each year. Analysts attribute the disparity to unmet expectations set during its 2019 reveal compared to its 2023 model, which offers a reduced range, fewer features, and a steeper price tag.

Last year, Awasthi was also entrusted with managing the Model 3 program while still fulfilling his Cybertruck responsibilities. In his goodbye message, he reminisced about his enriching eight-year tenure at Tesla, underscoring his contributions to the Model 3 ramp-up, Giga Shanghai, new electronic initiatives, and the unique Cybertruck project—all before hitting the age of 30.

Tesla emphasizes nurturing in-house talent, mostly promoting from within rather than hiring experienced external leaders. In the last five years, they have seldom sought high-level recruits from outside, favoring internal talent development. Awasthi's ascent is a testament to this strategy, though some analysts raise concerns about whether this approach may hinder large-scale project execution.

As Awasthi departs, Tesla must continue grappling with significant production scaling challenges, aiming to fulfill the ambitious targets it has outlined for its vehicles. His exit occurs amid a series of organizational transitions following layoffs and ongoing talent relocations within the company.
