Grand Opening of Independence Square by Sharjah's Ruler

On Tuesday morning, a significant event occurred in Sharjah as His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, officially opened the newly revitalized Independence Square. This opening coincided with the 54th Eid Al Etihad celebrations, lending the occasion added importance.

The highlight of the redevelopment is the impressive 34-metre-high Independence Monument, which was unveiled as His Highness removed the commemorative plaque. This striking structure, topped with a seven-pointed star symbolizing the seven emirates, stands as a monumental tribute to the UAE's independence journey.

Each face of the monument showcases significant historical narratives. One plaque commemorates 2 December 1971, when the Rulers united to form the UAE following liberation from British rule. Another plaque details the 151 years of British oversight, originating from the 8 January 1820 treaty. Further plaques narrate the establishment of the Sharjah Civil Air Station in 1932 and document the presence of a British military base, a point of historical dispute.

After the unveiling, His Highness explored the square, observing new features such as two fountains flanking the monument, redesigned pathways, expanded green spaces, and a modern lighting system that enhances the square's evening appeal.

The redevelopment extended to the surrounding area, with 24 building facades upgraded to reflect Sharjah's architectural identity. Additionally, 95 commercial signboards were replaced to create a cohesive urban appearance, supported by new lighting to enhance the area’s visual charm.

Infrastructure improvements played a crucial role, with enhancements to roads, pavements, and parking areas aimed at improving traffic flow and pedestrian safety. All lighting columns in the vicinity were also replaced as part of this enhancement initiative.

The revitalization of Independence Square aligns with Sharjah's broader initiatives to enhance the urban environment, boost quality of life, and preserve its cultural and architectural heritage.

Additionally, His Highness opened the renovated Imam Al-Nawawi Mosque located nearby. Originally constructed in 1995, the mosque has been updated in the Fatimid architectural style. After unveiling the reopening plaque, His Highness conducted prayers within the mosque. Renovations included raising the minarets and main walls, adding an external arcade, and improving internal facilities to better serve its religious and community duties.

Sheikh Dr Sultan was joined by several senior officials including Sheikh Fahim bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Sheikh Mohammed bin Humaid Al Qasimi, Sheikh Majid bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Abdulrahman bin Mohammed Al Owais, among other dignitaries.

This inauguration marks yet another significant step in Sharjah's enduring commitment to thoughtful urban development and the preservation of national heritage.
