Shaqueel van Persie Steps onto Senior Stage with Feyenoord

Post by : Raina Carter

Feyenoord’s head coach, Robin van Persie, recently addressed his decision to let his son Shaqueel make his first senior appearance during the Europa League clash against Celtic. He stressed that the decision was made solely from a coaching standpoint rather than a paternal one. Unfortunately, Feyenoord faced a disappointing 3-1 loss at home on Thursday, with Shaqueel coming off the bench late in the match.

At just 19, Shaqueel van Persie signed his initial professional contract with Feyenoord in 2022 and recently made the jump to the first-team squad. After being an unused substitute in a prior Eredivisie defeat to NEC Nijmegen, he made his official debut four days later against Celtic, stepping onto the pitch in the 81st minute to replace defender Jordan Lotomba amid a two-goal deficit.

Post-match, Robin van Persie explained, “That decision was made from a coach's perspective, not a father's, since we were chasing a goal. Shaqueel has the ability to score from various positions, which is why I brought him on the field.” However, despite his confidence, Feyenoord conceded a third goal moments later, securing a 3-1 win for Celtic.

Reflecting on the personal significance of Shaqueel's debut, Van Persie mentioned, “As a father, it's always special when your son makes his debut. However, I was focused on doing my job, just like Shaqueel was doing his.”

Feyenoord is looking to rebound in the Eredivisie this Sunday against SC Telstar, aiming to regain form and showcase their promising talents, including Shaqueel, who’s making strides at the senior level.

This carefully orchestrated debut underscores Feyenoord’s dedication to developing young talents while retaining professional integrity, despite personal connections. Although the encounter against Celtic ended unfavorably, Shaqueel van Persie’s initial senior play indicates the start of a bright future in Dutch football.
