Arab Cup Third-Place Match Between UAE and Saudi Arabia Called Off

Post by : Bianca Hayes

Extreme weather brought an unexpected conclusion to the Arab Cup third-place showdown on Friday, as the UAE Football Association announced the official cancellation of the match between the UAE and Saudi Arabia, following FIFA's decision. The match, scheduled at Khalifa International Stadium in Doha, was thwarted by relentless storms and significant rainfall that left the ground unplayable.

Having reached halftime with a score of 0-0, the onset of torrential rain disrupted the second half. Water accumulation across critical areas of the field forced officials to halt the game for over 150 minutes. A rapid response team mobilized around 100 personnel to address the waterlogged pitch. Despite their relentless efforts over two and a half hours, conditions remained unsafe for the players.

Referee Cristian Garay worked closely with the match commissioner, sanctioning two additional 30-minute pauses aimed at rescuing the match. Stadium staff utilized pumps and other equipment to manage the water, but, ultimately, the field did not satisfy safety requirements.

When officials considered resuming play, both head coaches—Olaroiu Cosmin for the UAE and Hervé Renard for Saudi Arabia—rejected the proposal, citing heightened injury risks. This unified stance led the organizing committee to officially cancel the game and initiate a report detailing the next course of action.

The cancellation highlighted a lack of regulatory clarity, as tournament rules did not provide specific instructions for handling matches interrupted by severe weather. Organizers indicated that resolving the third-place position would not involve declaring a draw, and a replay the following day seems unlikely, given that the tournament's final match between Jordan and Morocco is set for Friday evening.

Before the suspension, the match initiated with dynamic exchanges. The UAE employed a tactical shift to a 4-4-2 formation aimed at enhancing offensive positioning. Players Bruno Oliveira and Sultan Adel utilized the flanks, differing from their usual 4-2-3-1 build-up. This strategy nearly produced a goal when Ali Saleh's left flank run resulted in a close chance for Yahya Al Ghassani. Saudi Arabia also posed threats, including a disallowed attempt from Salem Al Dawsari.

Both teams were eager for a podium finish, but the tumultuous storm rendered the pitch unsuitable for play. With no safe alternative and regulatory ambiguity, organizers prioritized player safety in their decision. A ruling on the third-place award is expected as officials undertake a review of the event.
