7.5 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Northeastern Japan

A 7.5 magnitude earthquake rattled northeastern Japan late on Monday night, injuring more than 30 individuals and forcing thousands to leave their homes. The quake occurred at 23:15 local time (14:15 GMT) at a depth of 50 km, roughly 80 km off the coast of Aomori.

Tsunami Warnings and Initial Reactions

The Japan Meteorological Agency issued tsunami alerts initially, which were revoked after observing waves up to 70 cm. Although these waves were moderate, the warnings led to prompt evacuations for around 90,000 residents in the impacted regions.

Daily life was significantly disrupted by the earthquake, with many train services on the northeastern coast halted and approximately 2,700 households experiencing power outages. Emergency responders worked tirelessly throughout the night to evaluate damage and provide necessary assistance.

Authorities from electricity companies and safety regulators have reported no abnormalities at the Higashidori and Onagawa nuclear power facilities. The Fukushima plant, which suffered damage during the catastrophic 2011 disaster, also displayed no issues.
