Democratic leader Chuck Schumer revealed on Monday that three of his New York state offices received emailed bomb threats containing claims that the “2020 election was rigged.” The emails, sent with the subject line “MAGA,” referenced locations in Rochester, Binghamton and Long Island.
Schumer said on social media that local and federal authorities responded immediately, launching full security sweeps at all three offices. He confirmed that staff members and visitors were safe, thanking law enforcement for acting quickly to secure the buildings.
A law enforcement official, speaking anonymously due to the active investigation, confirmed that Suffolk County police checked Schumer’s Long Island office but did not provide further details about the threat.
US Capitol Police declined to offer specifics, citing standard policy not to discuss security arrangements for members of Congress.
Schumer strongly denounced the rising trend of political intimidation in the country, stressing that violence and threats have no place in American democracy. “No public servant, staffer, constituent or citizen should be targeted for simply doing their job,” he said.
The threats echo ongoing political tensions stemming from false claims that the 2020 presidential election was stolen—a narrative pushed by Donald Trump despite repeated court rulings dismissing such allegations. All 50 states certified the election results, and numerous lawsuits by Trump and his allies failed to produce evidence of widespread fraud.
New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani also criticized the threats during an event supporting Starbucks workers. He warned that allowing political violence to become normal would be a dangerous path for the country and urged people across party lines to reject such behavior.
