Saudi Arabia and Qatar Unite for High-Speed Rail Development

Post by : Mara Collins

Saudi Arabia and Qatar have formalized an agreement to construct a high-speed railway linking Riyadh and Doha, marking a historic collaboration between the two Gulf nations. This rail line will connect Riyadh’s King Salman International Airport with Doha’s Hamad International Airport and will also facilitate transport to Saudi cities such as Al-Hofuf and Dammam.

The train is slated to achieve speeds exceeding 300km/h (186mph), significantly reducing travel time between the capitals to around two hours, compared to the 90-minute flight duration. The ambitious project is expected to be completed in the next six years, catering to approximately 10 million passengers annually and creating up to 30,000 jobs collectively.

The agreement was inked by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS) and Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani during the Emir’s recent visit to Riyadh. This project stands as a key infrastructure advancement and signals the increasing cooperation between the two nations after a period of tense relations.

Tensions escalated in June 2017 when Saudi Arabia, along with its allies—the UAE, Bahrain, and Egypt—severed ties with Qatar, citing its alleged support for groups like the Muslim Brotherhood and its close rapport with Iran, claims Qatar refuted. Relations were fully restored in January 2021 following a summit held in AlUla, Saudi Arabia.

Since that agreement, leaders from both countries have engaged in frequent meetings and collaborated on regional diplomatic efforts, including advocating for a ceasefire in Gaza. The new rail initiative further exemplifies the strengthening relations and long-term ambitions for connectivity within the Gulf.
