Browns' Shedeur Sanders Set for Second Starting Opportunity

Shedeur Sanders is off to an impressive kickoff in the NFL, marking the first time a Browns rookie quarterback has triumphed in their first start in three decades. He now faces the task of steering Cleveland towards consecutive wins for the first time in two seasons.

On Monday, Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski confirmed that Sanders will lead the team once again next week. His opportunity comes following an outstanding 24-10 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders, during which he displayed confidence and advancement after a challenging debut two weeks prior.

Stefanski emphasized that the primary role of any quarterback is to ensure team success. He commended Sanders for achieving his first win and stated that the next objective is to focus on consistent improvement. The coach noted that young athletes develop by learning through games, and Sanders is already demonstrating that growth.

After facing hurdles in his initial outing against the Ravens, Sanders significantly improved on Sunday. He completed 11 out of 20 passes for 209 yards, including one touchdown and one interception. This marked just the third instance this season that a Browns quarterback surpassed 200 passing yards, underscoring the significance of Sanders' performance.

Offensive coordinator Tommy Rees crafted a strategy encompassing short, secure throws mixed with prompt deep shots. Thirteen of Sanders’ attempts were under 10 yards, aiding in establishing a rhythm. Rees also entrusted Sanders with deeper throws, which paid off. Among his successes were two passes over 21 air yards, notably a crucial 52-yard throw to Isaiah Bond.

On that play, Sanders evaded pressure from Maxx Crosby while executing a flawless pass as Bond broke free from cornerback Darnay Holmes. Additionally, Sanders connected on a thrilling 66-yard touchdown to Dylan Sampson on a screen pass, marking this duo as the Browns’ longest pass plays this season.

A key area of Sanders' improvement was his ability to avoid sacks and manage pressure. This had been a significant concern for him earlier in the preseason and during his match against Baltimore. Yet against Las Vegas, he faced only one sack, despite pressure on eight drop-backs. Stefanski remarked that the operation of the offense was smooth for a rookie, although he acknowledged ongoing areas for improvement while praising Sanders' strong mindset and adaptability to the NFL's pace.

While Sanders grabbed headlines, the Browns defense also showcased a powerful performance, registering ten sacks on Las Vegas quarterback Geno Smith, the second-highest total in franchise history. Myles Garrett further solidified his standout season with three sacks, while eight players contributed to the sack tally.

Nonetheless, the team still faces challenges on third-down conversions, having struggled again against the Raiders with a 3 for 12 outcome. On the offensive side, running back Jerome Ford's role diminished, gaining just one carry for a loss.

In injury news, defensive tackle Adin Huntington and tight end Brenden Bates are likely to miss several games. Meanwhile, linebacker Carson Schwesinger continues his impactful rookie campaign with 89 tackles to date.
