New York City: A senior appointee selected by Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani has resigned following the surfacing of old social media content featuring antisemitic remarks. The resignation of Mamdani's appointee was officially announced on Thursday, December 19, 2025.
Catherine Almonte Da Costa, appointed to Mamdani’s administration earlier this week, stepped down after her decade-old posts became widely circulated. These posts, which were shared in 2011 and 2012, were brought to light by the Anti-Defamation League.
Controversy Arises from Old Posts
According to Mamdani’s office, the resurfacing posts contained language that invoked harmful antisemitic stereotypes, offending the Jewish community. This situation quickly attracted significant attention, putting pressure on the mayor-elect’s administration.
In her public statement, Da Costa expressed profound regret over her past statements, asserting that they do not reflect her current values and acknowledging the distress they caused.
“As a mother of Jewish children, I am filled with deep remorse for the pain my words have caused,” she stated.
Position in the Upcoming Administration
Da Costa had been chosen to oversee Mamdani’s Office of Appointments, responsible for talent acquisition and supporting the building of the mayor-elect’s team.
With over a decade of experience, she had previously worked in the mayor's office. More recently, she held senior roles at a private communications firm and Sotheby’s, as noted by officials.
Despite her extensive experience, the renewed focus on her past led to the resignation of Mamdani's appointee, which was promptly accepted.
Mamdani's Response to Resignation
Zohran Mamdani confirmed that he accepted Da Costa’s resignation after she conveyed her regret regarding her previous comments.
“She recognized the harm caused by her statements and opted to resign. I support her decision,” Mamdani stated through a spokesperson.
The Anti-Defamation League refrained from providing further comments post-resignation but had previously released screenshots of three posts they claimed promoted antisemitic ideas.
Political Landscape and Repercussions
Following Mamdani's election win in November, numerous advocacy groups indicated their intent to scrutinize his policies and staff selections closely. The scrutiny heightened due to his critical stance towards Israel's military actions in Gaza.
Mamdani has faced ongoing inquiries about whether his political views verge into antisemitism. During his campaign, he attracted criticism for his failure to unequivocally denounce the phrase “globalize the intifada,” although he has more recently stated his disapproval of its use.
The resignation of Mamdani's appointee emerges as the mayor-elect gears up for his office inauguration next month, aiming to reassure New Yorkers of an inclusive and respectful administration.
A Critical Time for the Incoming Mayor
This event underscores the challenges Mamdani faces as he assembles his leadership team amid significant public and political scrutiny. The resignation has sparked a dialogue about accountability, past online conduct, and the expectations for public officials.
As Mamdani approaches his inauguration, the resignation of his appointee is poised to remain a key aspect of the broader conversation surrounding leadership, accountability, and trust within public service.
