Doha has unveiled the stunning new Lawh Wa Qalam: M.F. Husain Museum, a significant cultural addition that highlights the extraordinary life and work of Maqbool Fida Husain, an emblematic figure in 20th-century art. Often referred to as the “Picasso of India,” Husain’s artistic footprint transcends borders and cultures. Spanning over 3,000 square metres in Qatar Foundation’s Education City, this museum provides a captivating journey into Husain’s dynamic and innovative vision.
The museum's architecture is based on a conceptual sketch by Husain, resulting in four distinctive structural elements: a vibrant blue block, a slender white cylindrical tower, a striking yellow path, and a tent-like design. These elements symbolize the vibrancy and emotional depth that characterized Husain’s diverse body of artistic expression. His explorations included painting, film, photography, calligraphy, and design, all captured thoughtfully within the museum, offering insights into his profound creativity.
Beyond celebrating Husain's artistry, the museum underscores his deep cultural connections to the Middle East. His friendship with Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, Qatar Foundation’s Chairperson, deeply influenced his career trajectory, as she recognized his unique depiction of Arab culture. This partnership led to multiple commissioned works and ultimately inspired Husain to accept Qatari citizenship in 2010. Originally from Pandharpur, Maharashtra, he spent formative years in cities like Dubai, London, and Doha, shaping his international perspective.
The museum’s opening event was a glamorous affair, drawing prominent personalities from the arts and culture scene worldwide. Guests included renowned Bollywood filmmaker and designer Gauri Khan and acclaimed fashion designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee, alongside the Maharaja and Maharani of Baroda, Samarjitsinh and Radhikaraje Gaekwad. Their attendance highlighted Husain’s cross-cultural relevance and enduring influence, further emphasized by the presence of the artist’s family, including Mustafa Husain, adding emotion to this significant occasion.
Visitors have the chance to appreciate various phases of Husain’s career, with galleries thoughtfully designed for free movement, reflecting his unbounded imagination. His works, rich in bold colors and expressive styles, echo his Indian heritage and worldwide experiences. Interactive multimedia exhibits further enrich the visitor experience, elucidating Husain’s narrative flair and his connections to diverse cultures.
The launch of the Lawh Wa Qalam – M.F. Husain Museum marks a pivotal moment for Doha’s cultural scene, poised to attract art enthusiasts, scholars, and global tourists. This initiative demonstrates Qatar’s dedication to supporting artistic heritage and nurturing creative environments, while ensuring Husain’s inspiring legacy continues to resonate with future generations drawn to his audacious vision and artistic bravery.
