Two-time Olympic medallist and former world champion PV Sindhu has reflected on how Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s supportive words have made a lasting impression on India’s sporting community. She underlined that the Prime Minister often values determination and hard work as much as the medals themselves.
Valuing effort over medals
Sindhu described how, even in moments of disappointment, Modi’s remarks helped reframe the experience. She recalled that after earning a bronze, the natural sadness of missing a higher podium finish was eased by the Prime Minister’s reminder that any medal is a major accomplishment.
“When I got the bronze, it was natural to feel down about not getting gold, but he kept telling us that earning a medal itself is something to be proud of,” Sindhu said.
She added that Modi’s recognition reaches beyond podium finishers to those who lose by narrow margins, signalling that effort and sporting spirit count for a great deal.
Impact on the Indian Olympic contingent
Sindhu remembered the Indian team’s meeting with PM Modi after the Tokyo Games. The women’s hockey side had finished fourth and were visibly upset, yet the Prime Minister’s words helped change their mood.
“He told us that the result doesn’t erase what you achieved; you played with heart. Everyone was disappointed, but his appreciation made them feel as if their hard work had been truly honoured,” she said.
She noted that Modi never frames athletes’ efforts as failures; instead, he highlights the pride and progress that come from their dedication.
“He always reminded us that we’ve done very well and that the nation is proud of our efforts. That perspective means a lot to us,” Sindhu added.
Sindhu also offered a personal reflection earlier this year, observing a symbolic overlap between milestones in her career and Modi’s time in office.
“It almost felt poetic — as his leadership continued, my career hit important milestones too. It seemed like two paths running alongside one another, shaping moments that became defining in my life,” she said.
For Sindhu and many peers, the Prime Minister’s sincere encouragement represents more than public recognition; it is a validation of the discipline, sacrifice and spirit that define Indian athletes.
