Putin's Upcoming Visit to India for Key Summit on Dec 4-5

Russian leader Vladimir Putin is scheduled to travel to India on December 4 and 5 for the 23rd India-Russia Annual Summit, a visit arranged by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This significant event aims to assess the progress in their bilateral relations and strengthen their “Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership.” While in India, Putin will engage in extensive discussions with PM Modi and will also meet with President Droupadi Murmu, who will host a state banquet in his honor at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

The summit is an important occasion for both leaders to share insights on regional and global matters of shared interest and to outline future cooperation between India and Russia. The visit was initially revealed in August during National Security Advisor Ajit Doval’s visit to Moscow, with specific dates confirmed at a later time.

India and Russia enjoy a deep-rooted relationship dating back to the Soviet era, marked by strong trade ties, investment, and defense collaboration. Russia stands as one of India’s primary suppliers of military hardware, while India remains a key importer of Russian oil. This visit occurs against a backdrop of international tensions, particularly the US tariffs against India related to its Russian oil imports, underlining India’s adept balancing act in foreign policy.

Previous discussions between PM Modi and President Putin earlier this year have paved the way for this summit. They briefly met during the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in China and had a thorough conversation lasting about an hour. Moreover, PM Modi recently sent well-wishes to Putin via aide Nikolai Patrushev during an official visit to Delhi.

Putin's visit is notable, as it represents one of his few international trips given the ongoing Ukraine situation, reflecting his limited foreign travel due to the arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court. Since India is not associated with the ICC, it is not bound to arrest the Russian president.

As this pivotal meeting occurs, global attention will be focused on how it may reinforce the strong economic, political, and strategic ties between India and Russia, illustrating India’s capability in managing intricate international dynamics. The summit is anticipated to further enhance collaboration in defense, energy, and trade, positioning India as an essential ally for Russia in the region.

Furthermore, this state visit highlights India’s dedication to nurturing robust strategic partnerships and the vital role of dialogue in promoting international stability, despite prevailing geopolitical challenges worldwide.
