Putin's Official Visit to India Begins Today, Arrival Scheduled for 4:30 PM

Russian President Vladimir Putin is en route to New Delhi for a significant two-day State visit, aligning with the 23rd India-Russia Annual Summit. This marks his inaugural visit to India since the onset of the Ukraine crisis in 2022, with his previous visit recorded in December 2021. Invited by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, this visit intends to fortify the historic "Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership" that exists between the two countries.

While in India, Putin is expected to discuss a wide array of topics with Indian officials, including trade, economic collaboration, science and technology, cultural exchange, as well as regional and global matters of shared concern. Anticipations for the visit include the signing of over ten intergovernmental agreements and more than fifteen commercial and non-commercial memorandums, which signify the robust India-Russia partnership across various sectors.

Upon his arrival, Prime Minister Modi will host a private dinner for Putin in New Delhi. On December 5, the Russian leader will be given a ceremonial welcome at Rashtrapati Bhawan, complete with a tri-services guard of honour, and will pay his respects at the Raj Ghat mausoleum of Mahatma Gandhi. Formal discussions are set to occur at Hyderabad House, where both leaders will assess the progress of bilateral relations and set forth future cooperation agendas.

Leading up to this visit, Russia has hinted at potential discussions regarding the sale of additional S-400 defense missile systems and the prospect of India procuring Su-57 fifth-generation stealth fighter jets. Kremlin representatives have emphasized the ongoing collaboration in defense technology, which includes the production of BrahMos missiles and the sharing of advanced technical know-how, marking it as essential for the future of their strategic partnership. Nuclear energy agreements could also feature prominently during discussions.

This visit coincides with the 25th anniversary of the India-Russia Strategic Partnership, first established in October 2000 and later elevated to a "Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership" during Putin’s last visit in December 2010. The two nations aim to boost trade and economic relations, aspiring to achieve a bilateral trade volume of 100 billion dollars by 2030, with 2024-25 statistics indicating trade reached a historic high of 68.7 billion dollars, showcasing the escalating economic partnership.

Accompanying Putin is a delegation of senior Russian officials, including Defence Minister Andrey Belousov, as well as representatives from Roscosmos, Rosatom, and VEB.RF, along with leaders from major Russian financial institutions and industries such as Rosneft, Sberbank, Basic Element, Rusal, and VTB Bank. Their presence underscores the significance that Russia places on deepening its connections with India.

This prominent visit highlights the commitment of both India and Russia to enhance their political, economic, and defense cooperation, marking a crucial development in their long-standing bilateral relations as they jointly address global and regional challenges.
