During a speech on Thursday, President Vladimir Putin of Russia labeled the Ukrainian government as invalid, asserting that any peace discussions with Kyiv would be pointless. Concluding a three-day trip to Kyrgyzstan, he referred to the peace plan suggested by US President Donald Trump as “a collection of issues for dialogue” rather than an official draft, though he acknowledged it as a possible foundation for future negotiations.
Putin criticized Ukrainian leaders for not holding elections following President Volodymyr Zelensky’s term expiration. He argued that this lack of legitimacy jeopardizes any potential agreements. Ukrainian representatives countered that elections cannot occur under martial law while the nation defends itself against Russian aggression.
While recognizing that the US has acknowledged Russia's concerns during talks, Putin stressed that numerous critical issues still need addressing. “A serious discussion is required. Every detail is significant,” he stated.
Furthermore, the Russian president outlined Moscow’s terms for halting military actions, claiming that hostilities will cease only if Ukrainian forces withdraw from lands currently held by Russia. He warned that if Ukraine does not agree, Russia will fulfill its aims “by force.” Putin has previously insisted that Ukraine must entirely withdraw from Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, and Zaporizhia, including regions not under Russian command, before any peace talks will be entertained.
In addition to territorial conditions, Putin demands assurances that Ukraine will refrain from NATO membership and hosting Western military personnel, seeking to pull the country back under Moscow's control.
As diplomatic efforts progress, US envoy Steve Witkoff is scheduled to visit Moscow next week, while US Army Secretary Dan Driscoll may head to Kyiv. The ongoing conflict, which commenced with Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, has become Europe’s deadliest armed confrontation since World War II, garnering worldwide attention and ongoing international negotiations.
