Prada Expands Its Luxury Reach with €1.3 Billion Versace Acquisition

Prada, the renowned Italian fashion powerhouse, has successfully acquired the iconic brand Versace in a significant transaction valued at €1.3 billion ($1.51 billion). This move represents a remarkable strategic maneuver for Prada, broadening its luxury presence beyond the established names of its flagship label and Miu Miu.

The discussions leading to this pivotal acquisition began during the COVID-19 pandemic. Prada's eagerness to purchase Versace surged after a proposed sale by Capri Holdings to Tapestry did not materialize due to regulatory issues. Lorenzo Bertelli, the son of Prada's prominent figures Miuccia and Patrizio Bertelli, has been instrumental in orchestrating this deal and is set to become Versace's executive chairman following the finalization of the merger.

Since its inception in 1978 by Gianni Versace, the label has been celebrated for its extravagant and daring designs, securing its position as a staple in the luxury fashion industry. The integration of Versace into Prada’s portfolio is expected to blend classic heritage with modern growth potential.

This acquisition arrives on the heels of Donatella Versace's departure from her creative director role in March, concluding nearly thirty years at the helm. Dario Vitale, formerly Miu Miu's design director, has been appointed to lead Versace's creative direction, ushering in a new era for the brand.
