Discussions in Istanbul between Pakistan and Afghanistan have reached an impasse, Islamabad announced on Friday, just after both parties blamed each other for deadly border skirmishes that jeopardize a fragile ceasefire mediated by Qatar.
Pakistan’s Information Minister Attaullah Tarar expressed that talks have reached “a stalemate” as hostilities along the border persisted. He expressed gratitude to Turkiye and Qatar for their mediation efforts but criticized the Afghan Taliban for not adhering to its commitments established in Doha in 2021 regarding terrorism control.
Tarar asserted that Pakistan “will not endorse any actions by the Taliban administration that threaten regional peace,” highlighting Islamabad’s determination to uphold its sovereignty while still pursuing stability for the Afghan populace.
The situation escalated when Afghan officials reported four civilian casualties and five injuries resulting from an exchange of fire between Pakistani and Afghan forces at their shared border. Conversely, Pakistan’s foreign ministry stated that the Afghan side initiated the attack, claiming its troops acted merely in self-defense.
Leading Pakistan’s delegation is National Security Adviser Asim Malik, while Afghanistan’s team is led by Abdul Haq Wasiq, the country’s intelligence chief. Reports indicate that mediators are considering Pakistan’s demands aimed at terminating cross-border militant actions.
Since early October, the border region has witnessed intensifying confrontations, leading to multiple fatalities on both sides. The United Nations has recorded at least 50 civilian deaths and over 400 injuries in Afghanistan, while Pakistan states that 23 soldiers have been killed.
Islamabad accuses Kabul of offering refuge to Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) militants, who have been responsible for various recent assaults within Pakistan. The Afghan Taliban, however, denies providing safe haven to this group.
Despite a recent agreement to establish a joint surveillance framework, violence continues, reflecting the profound mistrust that characterizes the relationship between the two neighboring nations.
