The Nova Scotia Human Trafficking Unit (HTU) has charged 31-year-old Simon McNamee, an Ontario resident, with 17 serious offences related to human trafficking and sexual exploitation. The investigation began in July 2023 after a young victim came forward, and a second victim was also identified as police gathered evidence.

Who’s Involved?

  • McNamee lived in Vancouver, British Columbia, before being arrested by HTU and BC RCMP on Feb. 22, 2025. He was taken back to Nova Scotia to answer to charges.
  • On Feb. 26, he appeared in Halifax court and was released on conditions, with more court dates to follow.

What He’s Charged With

McNamee faces a total of 17 counts, including:

  • Trafficking in persons
  • Advertising sexual services
  • Procuring a person under 18
  • Receiving benefit from sexual services

These charges involve both adult and underage victims and cover a period from 2017 to 2023.

Support for Victims

Investigators are working closely with victims and support groups. Cpl. Brianna Taker emphasized: charges are only pursued when victims feel ready, and help is available through NS HTU’s 24/7 hotline.

Why This Matters

  • Human trafficking is a severe crime involving exploitation and abuse. Canada's Criminal Code calls trafficking "modern slavery."
  • Nova Scotia has been a trafficking corridor, often involving victims moved throughout Canada, making these investigations critical.

What Happens Next

  • McNamee must return to court on upcoming dates to face the charges.
  • Community and legal groups are offering help to the victims and working toward justice.
  • Police continue investigating and may lay more charges as more evidence or victims emerge.
