Lando Norris Approaches First F1 Title as Qatar Race Nears

Post by : Mara Collins

As the Formula One series heads to Qatar this weekend, Lando Norris is on the brink of securing his first world championship. Coming off a stellar season marked by reliable performances and key wins, the McLaren pilot is just a few points away from making history. With only two races remaining in the 2025 season, every point counts in this fierce competition against Oscar Piastri and Max Verstappen.

Norris touches down in Doha with a formidable 24-point lead over teammate Piastri and Red Bull's Verstappen. While this lead is reassuring, it’s not a guarantee for safety, as the upcoming two weekends still offer a total of 58 points—eight for the sprint event on Saturday and 25 each for the Grand Prix races, including Sunday’s Qatar showdown and the concluding round in Abu Dhabi next week.

This point allocation keeps the title chase alive, but Norris is in control of his chances. His advantageous position means he has the opportunity to become champion as early as this weekend.

In short, the answer is no. Even if Norris seizes victory in Saturday's sprint race while his rivals fall short, his lead would widen to 32 points. Yet, 50 points remain up for grabs in the last two races, thus Saturday alone cannot clinch the title.

Sunday presents the first genuine opportunity for Norris to secure his championship. If he manages to outscore both Piastri and Verstappen by two points throughout the weekend, he will emerge from Qatar as the new world champion. This would afford him a 26-point margin, precisely above the maximum of 25 available in the Abu Dhabi finale, effectively making him unbeatable.

Even if he doesn’t win on Sunday, finishing ahead of both Piastri and Verstappen by any margin could still crown him as champion. Alternatively, a win on Sunday while edging out his closest competitors by a mere one point would suffice.

Should the championship battle reach a point where a countback is necessary, Norris remains well-positioned. With eight wins to his name entering this race, he has the upper hand over Piastri's seven and Verstappen's six. Therefore, even if either rival claims victory in the season finale without Norris scoring points, he would still hold the championship based on sheer wins.

If Piastri wins in Abu Dhabi and levels with Norris on wins, Norris still leads due to possessing more second-place finishes. Verstappen’s total fall short, giving him no chance to overtake Norris through countback.

McLaren hopes their recent double disqualification in Las Vegas won’t derail their momentum. The team is confident that their impressive year will carry over into Qatar and Abu Dhabi, positioning Norris for a triumphant finish. As the title looms, they’re counting on the adage—“what happens in Las Vegas stays in Las Vegas”—to hold true.

If Norris maintains his composure and continues his steady scoring, he is well on his way to achieving the championship he has long sought.
