Nick Kyrgios senses 'miracle' in knee recovery and eyes Australian Open return

Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios has given supporters an encouraging update, revealing an unexpected improvement in a persistent knee issue. The 30-year-old, who managed only five singles appearances across the past three years after wrist and knee surgeries, sounded cautiously optimistic about the prospect of playing at the 2025 Australian Open.

"In the last month, I don't know what it is... something really has changed with my knee," Kyrgios told reporters. "It’s not swelling. It’s not feeling bad after a session."

The 2022 Wimbledon finalist described the sudden progress as almost miraculous, saying the joint feels markedly better than it has in recent seasons. "I don’t know whether to call it a miracle or anything, but my knee feels like it’s gotten younger by a couple of years," he added.

Kyrgios said he has been able to complete multiple consecutive training days without pain or setbacks for the first time in months. "I don’t want to jinx it, but something in it has gone, kind of allowed me to put three, four days of training together... and be able to actually recover and then build on that," he explained.

Out of action long enough to fall to 652 in the world rankings, Kyrgios would need a wild-card invitation to take part in the Australian Open. He has not played since a second-round defeat at the Miami Open in March 2025.

As a potential step back towards competition, Kyrgios is scheduled to play an exhibition match against women’s world number one Aryna Sabalenka in Dubai on December 28, billed as a special "Battle of the Sexes" event.
