Napoli claimed the Italian Super Cup on Monday with a convincing 2-0 victory over Bologna in the final held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The reigning Serie A champions were led by Brazilian winger David Neres, who scored both goals to secure Napoli’s third Supercoppa Italiana title.

The match started with Napoli showing strong intent, quickly taking control of possession and pressing high. Their persistence paid off just before halftime when David Neres unleashed a stunning curling shot from outside the penalty area that found the top corner, giving Napoli a well-deserved lead. This goal broke the deadlock against Bologna, last season’s Coppa Italia winners, who struggled to find rhythm against Napoli’s aggressive approach.

In the second half, Bologna attempted to build momentum but were caught off guard when goalkeeper Federico Ravaglia made a critical error. As he tried to play the ball out from the back, Neres intercepted a weak pass and calmly finished to double Napoli’s lead. This goal effectively sealed the match, leaving Bologna with little time to respond.

David Neres’ impact on the tournament was immense, as this was his third goal of the Super Cup. He also scored in Napoli’s 2-0 semi-final victory over AC Milan, underlining his importance to the team’s success.

Napoli coach Antonio Conte praised his squad’s performance after the final, saying, “The lads deserve congratulations. They showed how much they wanted this trophy for the fans, and now we can celebrate a great Christmas with this trophy in the cabinet.”

The Italian Super Cup traditionally featured a match between the Serie A champions and Coppa Italia winners. However, starting in 2023, the format expanded to a four-team tournament, including the runners-up from both competitions. This tournament will continue to be held in Saudi Arabia until 2029, as part of a long-term agreement.

With this win, Napoli adds another prestigious trophy to their collection and boosts their morale as they chase the Serie A title. Currently, Napoli trail league leaders Inter Milan by two points.

Napoli will return to Serie A action on Sunday, facing Cremonese away from home, while Bologna prepares to host Sassuolo, aiming to bounce back from this defeat.
