Meta has delayed the release of its cutting-edge mixed-reality glasses, code-named Phoenix, to 2027. Initially slated for the latter half of 2026, the company has chosen to extend development to ensure a more refined product.
As reported by Business Insider, an internal memo indicates that Meta executives believe the extra time will provide teams with “more breathing room” to enhance the hardware. The lightweight Phoenix goggles, previously known as Puffin, are expected to weigh around 100 grams, though they will feature lower-resolution displays and less processing power than high-end headsets like Apple’s Vision Pro.
This device is integral to Meta’s comprehensive mixed-reality strategy, which merges virtual and augmented experiences, allowing digital elements to meld with the tangible world. Phoenix is part of Reality Labs, the division responsible for the Quest headsets and Ray-Ban smart eyewear.
The postponement occurs as Meta braces for substantial cost-cutting initiatives. Bloomberg has recently highlighted the firm’s intention to decrease spending on metaverse projects by up to 30 percent, an adjustment that could affect the development timelines within Reality Labs.
Currently, the revised target for 2027 indicates Meta's focus on enhancement and reliability rather than rushing to market with its next significant hardware offering.
