Man Killed in Montreal's 23rd Homicide, Police Launch Probe

Post by : Raina Carter

MONTRÉAL — A tragic incident early Sunday morning has left Montreal residents shaken as police confirmed the city’s 23rd homicide of the year. A 52-year-old man was found lying unconscious on the street in the Saint-Léonard borough, and despite emergency efforts, he was declared dead at the scene. Police say the man suffered a fatal upper body injury, likely caused by a sharp object. The case is now under active investigation by the city’s Major Crimes Unit.

Emergency Call and Response

The sequence of events began shortly after 4:00 a.m., when a concerned caller contacted 911 to report a man lying motionless on the ground near a residential area in Saint-Léonard. Emergency medical technicians and police rushed to the scene and found the victim, a man in his early fifties, unconscious and with what appeared to be a serious wound to his upper body.

According to police reports, officers at the scene attempted CPR, but their efforts to resuscitate the victim were unsuccessful. The man was pronounced dead shortly after, right there on the street.

Confirmed Homicide: A Violent End

Montreal police have officially classified the death as a homicide, although the full circumstances surrounding the killing remain unclear. Police have not confirmed what kind of sharp object may have been used, or whether the man was attacked on the spot or moved there afterward.

Investigators have also not released the victim’s name, as they are still working to notify next of kin. It is not yet known whether the victim had any connection to criminal activity, or whether he was an innocent bystander caught in a violent act.

Another Crime Nearby: Possible Connection

In a development that has deepened the mystery, police reported a second crime just 30 minutes later, around 4:30 a.m., near the homicide scene. Officers responded to reports of a break-in at a nearby residence. A 31-year-old man was arrested in the area in connection with that incident.

While police have not formally linked the break-in suspect to the homicide, they have said they are looking closely at the possibility that the two events are connected.

“The break-in could possibly be linked to the killing, but it is still too early to confirm this connection,” said Montreal police spokesperson Caroline Chèvrefils.

The arrested man is currently in police custody and was scheduled to appear before the Court of Quebec on Sunday afternoon. He is being interviewed by investigators, but no charges have yet been laid in relation to the killing.

Major Crimes Unit Leads the Case

The case has been handed over to Montreal’s Major Crimes Unit, which deals with serious violent crimes such as murder and attempted murder. Officers are now gathering evidence, interviewing possible witnesses, and checking surveillance cameras in the area.

Forensic teams have also been working at the crime scene, looking for fingerprints, blood traces, and any items that could have been used as a weapon.

Police are urging anyone who may have seen or heard something unusual around the time of the attack to come forward. Any video footage from security cameras or dashcams from the area may be helpful in solving the crime.

Community in Shock

Saint-Léonard, located in the northeastern part of Montreal, is a quiet residential area known for its diverse population and family-friendly environment. Violent crimes like this are rare in the neighborhood, and residents are now expressing shock and fear following the incident.

“I’ve lived here for over 20 years. We’ve never had anything like this happen,” said one local resident, who declined to be named. “It’s scary to think something so violent could happen right outside our homes.”

Montreal’s Rising Homicide Count

This latest killing marks the 23rd homicide in Montreal in 2025, raising concerns about public safety in the city. Police have increased patrols in some areas and are working hard to bring down crime rates, but cases like this show the challenges they continue to face.

Each homicide adds pressure on law enforcement to deliver results quickly, and the public is now waiting for answers about who was behind this latest act of violence and why it happened.

What Happens Next?

The investigation is expected to continue over the coming days. Police are:

  • Conducting interviews with neighbors and potential witnesses
  • Analyzing any physical evidence from both the homicide and the break-in
  • Reviewing camera footage from nearby homes, stores, and streets
  • Awaiting the medical examiner’s full report to determine exact cause of death

Authorities are encouraging anyone with tips to contact Montreal police directly or call Crime Stoppers anonymously.
