New York City’s mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani has signalled a readiness to engage with President Donald Trump to confront one of the city’s most urgent issues: rising living costs and inflation. The youthful Democrat, whose swift ascent from outsider to the city’s youngest mayor in a century has drawn wide attention, framed cooperation as a pragmatic route to relief for residents.
At a recent press event, Mamdani pointed to soaring grocery bills, rent and everyday expenses as core concerns guiding his agenda and potential talks with the White House. “I’m open to speaking with President Trump about how we can work together to serve New Yorkers,” he said, underscoring that curbing inflation’s impact is a top priority.
His campaign championed policies aimed at easing financial pressure for families: proposals included free city bus travel, stronger rent-control measures and universal childcare supports. Mamdani has cast himself as an advocate for working households coping with tightening budgets.
He also drew contrasts with prior promises made at the national level, saying some proposed fixes had not delivered. Mamdani specifically criticised past moves such as threats to pause food assistance during federal shutdowns as examples of solutions that failed to protect vulnerable people.
During the briefing, Mamdani unveiled five women who will co-chair his transition, naming prominent figures such as Lina Khan, the chair of the Federal Trade Commission under President Joe Biden, and Maria Torres-Springer, who stepped down as deputy mayor under Eric Adams after her engagement with Trump.
As New York shifts toward a new administration, Mamdani’s focus remains on turning campaign pledges into practical action and exploring cross-party cooperation when it can relieve the financial strain facing city residents.
