French President Emmanuel Macron has advocated for enhancements to the U.S. peace initiative regarding Ukraine, asserting it ought to be more equitable and acceptable to both Ukraine and Europe. In remarks made on Tuesday, Macron underscored that while the proposal shows promise, certain elements require more thorough discussion and negotiation.
The U.S. recently introduced a comprehensive 28-point peace plan aimed at resolving the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Nonetheless, the proposal has raised eyebrows among officials in the U.S., Kyiv, and Europe, as it seemingly aligns more closely with Russia’s interests. Macron firmly stated that achieving peace should not translate into Ukraine's capitulation or coerced concessions.
He emphasized that the authority to determine territorial compromises rests solely with Ukraine. Macron remarked, "What has been proposed provides an indication of what may be acceptable to the Russians. Does that mean it should be accepted by Ukrainians and Europeans? Not at all."
Furthermore, Macron asserted that Ukraine’s principal focus, even post-peace, must be on rebuilding and reinforcing its military capabilities without any limitations. He also indicated that the management of frozen Russian assets currently based in Europe should be under European control.
The U.S. proposal aims to restrict the size of Ukraine’s armed forces while granting Washington a degree of oversight over the frozen Russian assets, a move that has sparked apprehensions among European leaders.
Additionally, Macron mentioned a potential reassurance force that could be stationed "well behind the front line" following the conclusion of peace agreements. This force would consist of soldiers from Britain, France, Turkey, and other nations tasked with training and ensuring security in Ukraine once the conflict has ceased.
He added that approximately 20 countries have extended support in various capacities, including air, land, and maritime assistance.
Macron's comments precede a video conference involving nations eager to support Ukraine's post-war reconstruction. His statements highlight the ongoing dialogues among international leaders to seek a fair and peaceful resolution to the conflict while safeguarding Ukraine's sovereignty and security.
