Lando Norris has expressed a desire for a painting that encapsulates the emotions and images from the final laps leading to his first Formula One world championship. The 26-year-old McLaren racer hopes to display it as a lasting reminder of an almost “out-of-body” sensation as he approached the chequered flag at Abu Dhabi’s Yas Marina Circuit on Sunday.
A day after celebrating his career's biggest triumph, Norris gathered with journalists and recounted how his mind wandered to memories of family, his early years, and countless hours of dedication. He stated that the last two laps, where a third-place finish secured him the championship, constituted “the best memory” of his life.
Norris revealed that as he neared the finish line, time seemed to slow. He envisioned the scene from his helmet—seeing the track's bumps and the vibrant papaya hues of McLaren surrounding him. That is the precise moment he hopes to have immortalized in a painting.
“I truly want someone to capture that moment through my eyes,” he shared. “Going around the last bend, spotting the chequered flag, being overcome with emotion... I want to hold onto that memory. It was the defining moment for me.”
A Feeling Respected by Other Champions
Norris’s sentiments resonated with those of McLaren icon Ayrton Senna, who described a similar transcendental experience during a memorable lap in Monaco in 1988. While he doesn't compare himself to Senna, Norris acknowledged he felt a similar sense of awe.
Three laps from the finish, he pondered how he would respond to winning the championship, worried he might feel indifferent. Yet, overwhelming flashbacks surged through him—memories of childhood karting, gaming sessions with his father Adam, and the sight of his mother Cisca cheering in the garage.
“It felt cinematic,” Norris remarked. “Memories flashed before me, like the final moments of someone’s life, but it was merely the last minutes before I became champion. I felt as if I were observing it all from above, like a bird’s-eye view.”
He Chose His Own Path
Before the race weekend, Norris acknowledged watching how past champions, such as Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel, celebrated their victories. Ultimately, however, he decided to forge his own experience.
“I’m glad I didn’t mimic anyone else’s gestures,” he reflected. “Everything felt organic, which made the occasion even more extraordinary.”
With his inaugural Formula One world title in hand and an emotional conclusion to the race, Norris aims to preserve this memory forever—in the form of a painting that captures the moment he fulfilled his aspiration.
