Kyrgios to Compete at Kooyong Classic Before 2026 Australian Open

Former Wimbledon runner-up Nick Kyrgios is gearing up for his comeback at next year’s Kooyong Classic, an exhibition event leading into the Australian Open. This choice signals his readiness to re-enter competitive tennis, having dealt with injuries throughout the 2025 season.

At 30, the Australian talent, celebrated for his dynamic play, encountered serious injuries that kept him to just five singles matches last year, the last being at the Miami Open in March. As a result, his ranking plummeted to 666th globally, leaving him without a protected status.

Due to his current position, Kyrgios will require wildcards to enter ATP warm-up tournaments before the Australian Open and the Grand Slam itself. However, with his accolades, including being a past Brisbane International champion, it's likely these wildcards will be granted to him.

Kyrgios has already marked several exhibitions for the remainder of 2025, including a highly anticipated “battle of the sexes” with Aryna Sabalenka in Dubai set for December 28. These matches aim to sharpen his competitiveness and restore match fitness ahead of the 2026 season.

Next year’s Kooyong Classic promises a formidable lineup, featuring notable Italian players like Flavio Cobolli, Matteo Berrettini, and World No. 8 Lorenzo Musetti confirmed for the men’s competition. After this year’s cancellation due to logistical challenges, the tournament is slated for January 13-15, right before the Australian Open kicks off at Melbourne Park.

Kyrgios’ entry is expected to attract considerable media and fan interest. His unconventional style, marked by explosive serves and creativity, has made him a crowd favorite. The event organizers are optimistic that his participation will enhance ticket sales and viewership for the Kooyong Classic, a crucial precursor to the Grand Slam season.

The Kooyong Classic offers players the chance to acclimate to Aussie match conditions, refine tactics, and build confidence on hard courts prior to the Australian Open. For Kyrgios, this exhibition marks a vital juncture in his recovery and quest for a successful return.

In addition to Kyrgios, the tournament will present other leading players with an opportunity to polish their games, connect with fans, and relish competitive match play ahead of the year's first Grand Slam. The revival of the Kooyong Classic is anticipated as a thrilling event for tennis enthusiasts and a strategic venue for Kyrgios' eagerly awaited comeback.
