Gunman’s Family Not Aware of Radical Views, Say Indian Authorities

Indian law enforcement officials have stated that the relatives of Sajid Akram, recognized as one of the assailants in the tragic Bondi Beach shooting in Australia, were completely oblivious to his radical ideologies or actions. They emphasized that there is no found evidence connecting his radicalization to India or any influences within his home state of Telangana.

The attack occurred on Sunday amidst a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach in Sydney, marking Australia's deadliest mass shooting in approximately three decades. Authorities are investigating the incident as a terrorism act directed at the Jewish population. A total of sixteen individuals were killed, including Sajid Akram, who was fatally shot by law enforcement.

Australian police reported that Sajid Akram, aged 50, had emigrated from India to Australia in 1998. His son, 24-year-old Naveed Akram, was also implicated in the shooting and is considered an accomplice; he was shot by police and is currently in critical condition at a hospital.

Telangana authorities mentioned in a statement that Sajid Akram, originally hailing from Hyderabad, maintained minimal contact with his family in India. Family members declared to police that they were wholly unaware of any extremist beliefs or plans. They also had no understanding regarding the circumstances that may have contributed to his radicalization.

Indian police confirmed that Sajid Akram made six trips to India since relocating to Australia, primarily for familial reasons. Officials stated that he had no criminal history or negative record during his visits to India, both prior to his migration and afterwards.

Australian officials additionally disclosed that both Sajid and his son traveled to the Philippines last month. Sajid used an Indian passport, while Naveed traveled on an Australian passport. The intent of this journey is still under investigation, and it remains uncertain if they had any affiliations with extremist groups or received any kind of training during their time abroad.

Telangana police reiterated that, based on existing evidence, the radicalization of both individuals does not appear to have any associations with India. They confirmed that there is no documented local support or involvement linked to Hyderabad or the surrounding region.

This statement comes amid challenges regarding international connections and cross-border extremism, especially following such violent attacks. Indian authorities have emphasized the necessity for factual investigation to prevent unwarranted blame on families or communities.

While inquiries continue in Australia, Indian police affirm their readiness to provide complete cooperation if further information is required. Currently, officials stress that the gunman's family in India had no role in, nor prior knowledge of the violent events that transpired thousands of kilometers away.
