Why Indian Immigration Agents in Canada Are Facing Attacks

Post by : Samiksha

Immigration agents serving the Indo-Canadian community in parts of Toronto and Vancouver are increasingly facing threats, extortion attempts and violent intimidation, raising serious concerns about safety within the sector. Recent incidents suggest organized criminal elements may be targeting consultants perceived to have financial resources or community influence.

One of the most alarming cases occurred on January 3, when the home of immigration consultant Vikram Sharma in Brampton, part of the Greater Toronto Area, was shot at multiple times. According to reports, an unidentified masked individual opened fire on the property, sending shockwaves through the local community and prompting fears of escalating violence.

Sources indicate that Sharma and his family left Canada shortly after the incident, just over three years after immigrating. Investigators believe the shooting may be linked to an extortion demand reportedly amounting to CA$500,000, part of a broader pattern of threats aimed at immigration professionals in major Canadian cities.

Similar intimidation tactics have been reported in parts of Vancouver, where agents say they have received threatening calls and messages demanding large sums of money. Many consultants now fear that their work within tightly knit immigrant communities has made them vulnerable targets for criminal networks seeking easy profits.

Community leaders and immigration professionals are calling for stronger police protection and coordinated action by federal and provincial authorities. They warn that continued attacks could drive skilled consultants out of Canada, leaving new immigrants without trusted guidance and undermining confidence in the country’s immigration ecosystem.
