India has unveiled revised visa regulations aimed at simplifying the entry process for foreign talent, particularly from China. This initiative is designed to assist Indian industries that depend on Chinese engineers and technicians for critical factory operations and training.
The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade launched a digital platform last month that enables companies to generate sponsorship letters online for foreign employees. The visa application timeline has been significantly reduced, eliminating the need for multiple government approvals and expediting the entire process.
The new regulations will cover essential roles such as machinery installation, production line maintenance, and factory commissioning. Many sectors, especially electronics and solar energy, heavily rely on Chinese professionals for specialized equipment operation and training of local workers.
Previously imposed visa restrictions following the 2020 border clash between India and China had hindered the entry of Chinese professionals, causing delays in industrial operations and posing expansion challenges for firms like Xiaomi in India. Analysts project that these delays have led to approximately $15 billion in losses for Indian electronics manufacturers over a four-year span.
This policy shift aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent visit to China, where he met with President Xi Jinping, indicating a mutual interest in enhancing cooperation while remaining cautious.
Business leaders have responded positively to the reforms, noting that faster visa processing will lead to more efficient factory operations, alleviate skill shortages, and bolster expansion initiatives. This reform underpins India's ambition to emerge as a global manufacturing powerhouse amidst increasing international competition.
