Lewis Hamilton has announced his intention to completely disconnect during the Formula 1 winter break following a challenging first season with Ferrari. The seven-time world champion transitioned to the Italian team this year after his tenure with Mercedes, generating a wave of excitement among fans and analysts alike. Expectations were high given Ferrari's second-place finish in the constructors' standings last season, leading many to believe Hamilton could vie for an eighth championship. However, reality turned out to be starkly different.
This year marked one of the most difficult seasons of Hamilton's illustrious career. For the first time, he failed to reach the podium in any Grand Prix. His performance woes continued in the final races, with three consecutive early exits in qualifying adding to his growing frustration. Ahead of the finale in Abu Dhabi, he expressed feelings of an “unbearable amount of anger” after qualifying in 16th place. Although he managed to finish eighth on race day, he now emphasizes the need for a complete mental reset.
Hamilton revealed plans to avoid all communication over the winter, stating he won't even bring his phone. He expressed a desire to “unplug from the matrix” and fully devote time to personal rest. In a declaration of his commitment to this break, he joked about “throwing his phone in the bin,” stressing the importance of recovering from a mentally taxing season.
Teammate Charles Leclerc, who achieved seven podiums this season and finished fifth overall, also voiced his disappointment. With Ferrari failing to secure any race victories this year, Leclerc remarked that the upcoming season—with new F1 regulations—is a “now or never” scenario for the team. Ferrari hasn't clinched a Drivers' Championship since 2007, when Kimi Raikkonen took the title, and this season, the team ended up fourth overall, falling short of their ambitions.
Responding to the frustrations of both drivers, team principal Fred Vasseur took a measured approach, reflecting that every team faces similar trials. He pointed out that regardless of whether a team finishes first or tenth, the overarching goal remains to learn and enhance performance. Looking to the future, Ferrari is gearing up for next season with the hope of reclaiming their strong form, emphasizing driver performance, team morale, strategic planning, and expectations for the upcoming F1 season.
