Tragic Goa Nightclub Blaze Claims 25 Lives as Victims Named

Authorities have identified all 25 victims of the devastating fire that engulfed the Birch by Romeo Lane nightclub in Goa. Among the deceased are 20 staff and five tourists. On Sunday, family members and friends gathered at Goa Medical College as officials disclosed the names of those lost in the early hours blaze. Among the tourists, four were from Delhi, three of whom were part of a single family, while the fifth hailed from Karnataka. The remaining fatalities included staff from various states and neighbouring nations, such as Uttarakhand, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Assam, Uttar Pradesh, and Nepal.

The fire erupted shortly after midnight on Sunday, believed to be triggered by a cylinder explosion that unleashed fierce flames inside the nightclub situated in Arpora, approximately 25 kilometres from Panaji. Eyewitness accounts suggest the blaze may have ignited on the first floor, where many patrons were enjoying themselves when smoke began to fill the room. As panic ensued among the nearly 100 people on the dance floor, many tried to flee towards the lower floor and kitchen area, inadvertently blocking escape routes for both guests and staff. Authorities confirmed that fourteen of the deceased were workers, while the rest were tourists and local visitors.

This popular nightclub, nestled alongside the Arpora river backwaters, had a narrow entrance and exit, complicating rescue efforts as fire engines were unable to get to the building directly, having to stop around 400 metres away. This delay exacerbated the chaos, allowing flames to spread quickly and smoke to engulf the venue. The design flaws and the severe nature of the fire turned the site into a lethal trap.

A complete list of the deceased has been released, with names including Mohit, Pradeep Mahto, Binod Mahto, Rahul Tanti, Satish Singh, Manojit Mal, Churna Bahadur Pun, Surender Singh, Subhash Chetri, Jitendra Singh, Sumit Negi, Manish Singh, Vivek Katwal, Sabin, Sunil Kumar, Digambar Patir, Rohan Singh, Dominic, Manoj Jora, Sudeep, Ishaq, Saroj Joshi, Vinod Kumar, Anita Joshi, and Kamla Joshi. The tourists from Delhi and Karnataka were confirmed as guests, while the majority were nightclub employees.

Investigations are ongoing to determine the fire's cause and to assess potential safety violations. This incident raises serious concerns regarding emergency preparedness, fire safety equipment, and crowd management in Goa's entertainment venues. Many locals and visitors expressed disbelief, noting that the bustling club was typically crowded on weekends, which makes the tragedy even more profound.
