Virginia turned a page as Ghazala Hashmi took office as lieutenant governor, making history as the first Muslim and first South Asian American to hold the post. Her elevation to statewide office is being celebrated as a sign of growing diversity in American leadership.
Born in India, Hashmi was just four years old when her family moved to the United States in 1968. Though raised in America, she has kept a lasting bond with her birthplace. About ten years ago she returned to Hyderabad, exploring the city’s storied corners, from the Charminar to Chowmahalla Palace and the celebrated collections of the Salar Jung Museum.
Her cousin Rasia remembers the visit as an emotional homecoming. Rasia said Hashmi’s time in the city underscored her deep ties to both her paternal and maternal relatives, and the trip included time spent with family that was meaningful to her.
Food also left an impression: Rasia noted that the vibrant, spicy flavours of Hyderabadi cuisine were something Hashmi particularly enjoyed during her stay, adding a sensory layer to the reunion with her roots.
As lieutenant governor, Hashmi is expected to champion policies that reflect inclusion and opportunity, bringing to the role a perspective shaped by both her immigrant family story and years in public life.
Her rise from a childhood in India to a prominent role in Virginia politics is being viewed as a testament to persistence and the value of staying connected to one’s heritage while serving a broader community.
For Indian Americans and Hyderabadis alike, Hashmi’s achievement is a source of pride and optimism, with many looking forward to the contributions she will make to the common good in her new position.
