In a remarkable auction in London, the Imperial Winter Egg, a stunning creation by Fabergé, achieved a jaw-dropping £22.9 million ($30.2 million), breaking previous records for the iconic jeweller.
Originally commissioned by Tsar Nicholas II in 1913 as a gesture of love for his mother, this egg is celebrated as one of Fabergé’s finest works. Designed by Alma Theresia Pihl, one of only two pioneering female artisans at the famous St. Petersburg jeweller, the Winter Egg exemplifies exquisite craftsmanship.
Standing at 8.2cm, the egg is beautifully constructed from rock crystal, embellished with rose-cut diamonds and charming platinum snowflakes. Its delicate interior unveils a tiny basket crafted from white quartz flowers, showcasing Fabergé’s exceptional attention to detail.
The final bid eclipsed the prior record of £8.9 million, set in 2007 for another Fabergé egg. Of the 50 eggs made for the Romanov dynasty between 1885 and 1917, merely seven are still privately owned, making this one a highly coveted treasure for collectors.
