Elon Musk Envisions a Future Where Work is Voluntary

Post by : Bianca Hayes

Elon Musk, the visionary behind Tesla, SpaceX, and xAI, has once again laid out a striking forecast. Speaking on Nikhil Kamath’s “People by WTF” podcast, Musk suggested that within the next two decades, the concept of work might evolve into a choice rather than a necessity due to advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics.

“In less than 20 years, working could be a choice rather than a requirement. It would resemble a hobby,” Musk stated. He elaborated that enhancements in AI and robotics could meet all human needs, making work optional for most people.

Musk envisioned a scenario in which AI and robots take over almost all tasks that people currently perform. “If you can think about it, it can be realized,” he remarked. He anticipates that AI will eventually fulfill all human desires, allowing it to operate independently without human oversight.

Moreover, Musk argues that such a technological shift could significantly diminish the relevance of money. “If AI and robotics meet all our needs, the importance of money could decrease substantially,” he explained, suggesting that energy could become the new standard of value, transitioning from monetary systems to a more resource-based economy.

Previously, Musk has advocated similar perspectives, arguing that AI and humanoid robots could alleviate poverty by making assets and resources universally available. He envisions a future where human pursuits focus on hobbies, creativity, and personal development rather than survival.

While Musk's forecasts may seem ambitious, they echo ongoing debates in technological and economic arenas regarding automation, universal basic income, and the long-term influences of AI on society. Whether this vision comes to fruition in the next decade or so, it raises critical questions about the future dynamics between humans, technology, and labor.
