Dubai Launches Its Inaugural Crewed Air Taxi Flight

Post by : Bianca Hayes

A transformative milestone in urban mobility was achieved as Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) and Joby Aviation conducted the inaugural crewed electric air taxi flight across the UAE. The flight took off from the Dubai Jetman Helipad located in Margham and landed at Al Maktoum International Airport just 17 minutes later during the Dubai Airshow 2025, marking the nation’s first point-to-point eVTOL trip.

This historic flight adds traction to Dubai's ambition of launching commercial aerial taxi services by 2026. RTA confirmed that the construction of the world’s first dedicated air taxi vertiport near Dubai International Airport has surpassed the 60% completion mark. Developed by UK-based Skyports Infrastructure, this multi-level facility is designed to handle thousands of annual landings once it becomes operational.

In preparation for a wider network, RTA has formed partnerships with Emaar Properties, Atlantis The Royal, and Wasl Asset Management Group. These collaborations will see the development of additional vertiports in bustling areas, which will form the initial route map for the air taxi service. Anticipated locations include Zabeel Dubai Mall, Palm Jumeirah at Atlantis The Royal, and Dubai Marina near the American University in Dubai, all designed to facilitate fast connections to airports, business hubs, and major tourist attractions.

Joby's electric air taxi features vertical take-off and landing capabilities with a design tailored for short urban journeys. Equipped with six rotors and four battery packs, it can achieve speeds of up to 320 km/h and has an operational range of approximately 160 km. Quieter than conventional helicopters, the aircraft can accommodate four passengers alongside a pilot and requires minimal ground area for operations.

This recent flight is a part of Joby’s ongoing experimental program in the region. Previous tests in Margham assessed the aircraft's compatibility with local weather patterns and airspace conditions. These tests are essential as they pave the way for expanded operations leading up to the 2026 rollout.

Skyports’ primary vertiport near DXB spans around 3,100 square metres across four levels, featuring parking zones, charging stations, take-off pads, and fully climate-controlled passenger waiting areas. Built to adhere to the highest global safety standards, it is expected to facilitate around 42,000 landings annually, catering to nearly 170,000 passengers.

With foundational agreements secured, infrastructure development in progress, and increasing test flight activity, Dubai is set to become the first city globally to implement a comprehensive urban aerial mobility network. The new system aims to significantly decrease travel times—such as the journey from Dubai International Airport to Palm Jumeirah trimmed to approximately 10 minutes—offering a swift, efficient, and sustainable travel alternative for both residents and visitors once operations officially commence in 2026.
