In response to the unpredictable weather conditions affecting Dubai and the UAE, Dubai Municipality has rolled out extensive measures. The authority is vigilantly monitoring the situation while dedicated field teams work around the clock. These initiatives are part of a comprehensive preparedness strategy aimed at minimizing the effects of heavy rainfall and ensuring essential services continue without disruption.
The municipality's enhanced approach concentrates on sustaining infrastructure efficiency under all weather conditions. Major priorities include ensuring public safety, protecting property, reducing interruptions, and facilitating smooth traffic throughout the emirate.
As part of proactive measures, engineers have carried out thorough inspections and maintenance of the stormwater drainage systems throughout the city. This includes the establishment of 60 kilometers of above-ground pumping lines to hasten water removal in flood-prone areas.
To further improve storage capabilities, six temporary lakes have been constructed in critical locations, complementing existing rainwater storage lakes that can hold nearly 600,000 cubic meters. These enhancements help alleviate pressure on primary systems during heavy rainfall events. The pumping systems are also linked to major drainage outlets including the Dubai Water Canal, Dubai Creek, coastal entries, and an extensive tunnel network to secure safe water management.
Operational teams are intensifying their cleaning and maintenance operations, focusing on rainwater drainage inlets, filters, and gradients. Over 84,000 drainage inlets have been checked in collaboration with real estate developers and free zones to ensure seamless functionality of the network prior to and during rain episodes.
24/7 Emergency Response Activated
Dubai Municipality has established a 24/7 emergency response framework, equipped with state-of-the-art machinery and logistical support. These teams are responsible for removing accumulated water, resolving blockages, and addressing public service calls. Additional resources have been secured through pre-approved contracts with private firms to aid in water pumping during peak demands.
Eng. Adel Mohammed Al Marzouqi, Head of the Emergency, Crisis and Disaster Management Team, emphasized that Dubai’s proactive stance integrates engineering solutions, infrastructure enhancements, and meticulous planning. He pointed to temporary lakes, system expansion, and various drainage connections as pivotal strategies for managing severe weather while ensuring daily activities remain unaffected.
He further noted that collaborating with governmental partners, property developers, and key stakeholders improves decision-making processes and accelerates response times. Training sessions and practical drills have also been conducted to ensure technical teams are well-prepared for changing weather patterns.
Encouraging Public Cooperation
In addition to infrastructure improvements, the municipality has held simulation exercises to bolster communication with call centers and simplify emergency reporting processes. Authorities have urged residents to adhere to safety measures, limit travel during adverse weather, and report any water buildup or emergencies through the Dubai Municipality Contact Centre at 800900 or via WhatsApp.
