Dubai is preparing to introduce a new regulation requiring delivery motorcycles and e-bikes to showcase a front number plate, marking a pivotal change in the city's approach to managing its growing delivery industry. This change will require vehicles to display plates in the front for the first time, as opposed to the previous practice of having them only at the rear.
Set to take effect at the end of December, the new requirement will roll out in phases. Rather than an immediate overhaul, the rule will be implemented progressively as delivery vehicle licenses are renewed, replaced, or reissued. This gradual approach aims to facilitate a smooth transition for companies with extensive delivery operations.
The new front plates are designed for easy visibility, featuring a gold background and black text, with a unique code, ‘9’, that clearly identifies motorcycles and e-bikes designated for delivery services. Vehicles that meet the criteria will receive a standardized number upon registration, renewal, or replacement of plates in case of damage or loss.
This regulation specifically targets vehicles engaged in commercial delivery tasks, such as parcel and document transport, order fulfillment, and rental services. It does not extend to private motorcycles or bicycles intended for personal use.
Officials indicate that this initiative is part of a larger campaign to enhance oversight in the delivery sector, which has notably surged with the rise of online shopping and food delivery services. Enhanced identification both at the front and back is anticipated to bolster monitoring, improve enforcement efficiency, and promote road safety.
This action follows previous measures implemented for delivery riders, including restrictions on using certain high-speed lanes on multi-lane roads. Collectively, these strategies aim to mitigate hazards on bustling roads while ensuring a smoother traffic experience for all users.
By reinforcing regulations methodically and thoughtfully, Dubai exemplifies its commitment to evolving transport policies that respond to the shifting demands of urban mobility, while prioritizing safety and responsibility.
