Darwin, a city in Australia’s Northern Territory, was hit hard by the ferocious tropical cyclone named Fina. Striking late Saturday, November 22, the cyclone unleashed fierce winds and torrential rain. Classified as a category three storm, Fina's wind gusts peaked at 205 kilometers per hour as it moved away from Darwin on Sunday, November 23.
In light of safety concerns, Darwin International Airport was closed on Sunday while officials endeavored to restore safe operations. The ongoing strong winds and heavy rainfall posed continuing challenges for the area. Emergency services advised residents to steer clear of downed power lines and refrain from sightseeing due to the ongoing hazards.
With a population of around 140,000, Darwin residents were reminded of the tragic Cyclone Tracy in 1974, which caused immense destruction and loss of life. Thankfully, there were no serious injuries reported this time, though numerous homes and infrastructure sustained damage. Power outages were widespread across the city, and authorities are still evaluating the full impact of Fina.
Local power and water authorities began damage inspections early Sunday morning to pinpoint affected areas and initiate repairs. Category three cyclones such as Fina are known to inflict significant harm on buildings, crops, and trees, often leading to widespread power outages.
This cyclone event follows recent weather disruptions in Australia, including ex-tropical cyclone Alfred, which struck Queensland in March, leading to school closures and power outages. Authorities remain vigilant, emphasizing public safety and the prompt restoration of services in Darwin.
