On Monday, Melania Trump introduced the first Christmas decorations at the White House since her family’s return, embracing the festive theme “Home Is Where the Heart Is.” This year’s decorations also celebrate the upcoming 250th anniversary of the United States, infusing patriotism into the holiday spirit.
Volunteers from around the nation contributed a remarkable transformation of the Executive Mansion. This year’s display features an impressive total of 75 wreaths, 51 Christmas trees, over 700 feet of garland, more than 2,000 strands of lights, 25,000 feet of ribbon, 2,800 gold stars, 10,000 butterflies, and 120 pounds of gingerbread to create a vibrant holiday atmosphere.
Notably, this year's setup is partially altered due to President Donald Trump’s ongoing ballroom construction project, resulting in the demolition of the East Wing and its colonnade. As a result, the flow for visitors has changed significantly. The traditionally placed official White House Christmas tree now resides in the Blue Room, doubling as a tribute to Gold Star families adorned with gold stars and state-themed ornaments.
While construction continues, public tours will resume on Tuesday, albeit on a limited route restricted to the State Floor. Guests will pass through the East Room, the Green, Blue and Red Rooms, the State Dining Room, Cross Hall, and the Grand Foyer. Access to the Ground Floor including the Library and the Vermeil and China Rooms will remain unavailable.
Despite these adjustments, the White House anticipates tens of thousands of visitors for holiday tours, receptions, and festive gatherings. Entry will now be through the North Portico via a newly installed semi-permanent walkway.
Each room in the mansion carries its own unique theme. The East Room showcases red, white, and blue décor with golden eagle accents, honoring the forthcoming America250 celebrations. The Green Room features a family-friendly setup with large portraits of George Washington and Donald Trump made from over 6,000 Lego-style puzzle pieces. Meanwhile, the Red Room dazzles with thousands of blue butterflies, emphasizing youth initiatives and showcasing Melania Trump’s Fostering the Future program.
A perennial favorite, the gingerbread White House located in the State Dining Room presents the South Portico alongside intricate details of the Yellow Oval Room, crafted from gingerbread, chocolate, pastillage, and royal icing, continuing a beloved holiday tradition.
Melania Trump, along with Usha Vance, wife of Vice President JD Vance, visited Joint Base Andrews where they spent time assembling care packages and holiday cards for deployed service members alongside military families. The First Lady emphasized the strength of families supporting service members during periods of separation.
