China Urges Thailand and Cambodia to Revive Ceasefire Negotiations

Post by : Sean Carter

China has urged Thailand and Cambodia to immediately implement a ceasefire and return to discussions aimed at peacefully resolving their ongoing border tensions. Deng Xijun, the Chinese Special Envoy for Asian Affairs, highlighted the necessity of prioritizing peace over conflict for both nations.

For the last three weeks, hostilities have escalated, with Thailand and Cambodia exchanging rocket and artillery fire along their 817-kilometer boundary. This resurgence of conflict follows the breakdown of a previous truce mediated by Malaysia, under ASEAN's chairmanship, and former U.S. President Donald Trump. Thousands of residents have been displaced, and local communities have been severely hampered in accessing fundamental food and shelter amid the violence.

China, alongside other ASEAN diplomats, continues to advocate for restraint and immediate cessation of hostilities. As part of its diplomatic efforts, Deng Xijun recently visited both nations for discussions with prime ministers and senior officials, reiterating China's readiness to facilitate dialogue and support mediation efforts.

Thailand and Cambodia are set to convene a meeting of defense officials on Wednesday to talk about the resumption of the ceasefire, a step welcomed by ASEAN as it champions peaceful resolutions to ongoing conflicts within the region.

Positioning itself as a "friend" and "close neighbor" to both nations, China aims to mediate in a constructive and balanced manner. Chinese state media has underscored its successful mediation record, particularly in contexts like the recent Iran-Saudi Arabia reconciliation. Beijing’s intent is to reduce tensions and create a conducive environment for negotiations.

The Chinese government affirmed its support for ASEAN's initiatives and expressed its readiness to help establish conditions favorable for peace. Through promoting dialogue without overtly referencing the earlier Trump-mediated arrangements, China seeks to uphold its credibility and impartiality in mediation.

The border tensions between Thailand and Cambodia highlight deeper historical and territorial complexities in the region. Analysts assert that measured diplomacy and continuous dialogue are vital to avert additional violence and safeguard civilians affected by the current conflicts.

By actively encouraging ceasefire discussions, China showcases its commitment to regional stability and its readiness to aid in peaceful resolutions. Both Thailand and Cambodia are now presented with a crucial chance to cease weeks of violence and strive towards a lasting resolution of their border disputes.
